The following scenarios and questions are based on actual client enquiries.
Products & Materials
Q. Have I found the best source of information for custom Zinc products in Australia?
In short, YES!
Zinc FX is Australia’s most experienced designer and fabricator of decorative and rustic zinc products, all of which are locally made. We offer zinc tables, zinc bars, zinc kitchen benches, zinc splashbacks and zinc decorative panels.
Q. What does REAL Zinc look like?
Solid Zinc sheet is one solid colour, when brand new and comes on a roll 1000mm wide (no speckles like cheap Galvanised zinc sheeting)
To achieve the VERY popular antique look, we apply a cocktail of chemicals and work it into the surface of the metal by hand polishing. The unique finish is then sealed (optional) with clear polyurethane.
Q. Is Zinc expensive?
At the moment, Zinc is an expensive product compared to stone & stainless steel on counter tops. The low volume demand means we are paying higher prices locally for Zinc while we export TONS overseas.
This is likely to change IF the volume increases however, it remains a boutique metal for this application.
Q. Can I use zinc in my busy kitchen
Yes with some understanding of the unique character of solid zinc. You can’t be too fussy when working on a zinc bench, it stains, blooms, dents and scratches easily. That’s WHY the adventurous choose zinc over stainless steel – it’s alive – responsive – and hard wearing.
Zinc responds to everything you do, a changing canvass, a developing art work. If the developing patina doesn’t suit you, just lightly scrub it back to the original shiny finish.
Q. Is zinc poisonous?
Zinc is safe for food preparation and actually anti-bacterial but be careful. Galvanised zinc is toxic, we only use solid zinc at Zinc FX, and this is soldered on the corners. The latter is a soft metal with no speckles and far more costly than cheap galvanised sheeting which is stiff and cannot be welded. Solid zinc will not rust, galvanised metal sheets will definitely rust and create toxins.
Q. Can I wrap my existing table in Zinc?
This works well IF the table is simple in design (right angles without radius corners) BUT it’s a delicate product that is easily damaged in transit. We have to quote to include custom made crates for transport. You may need a local handy man to glue the Zinc to your table?
Q. Can you make a table for me, I can’t find one I like?
Sure, this is what we do at Zinc FX. If you gather some images of the features you like elsewhere, those can be incorporated into YOUR unique design. Any size and almost any shape, we can crate and transport anywhere in Australia.
Q. How popular is zinc?
Be the trend-setter in your group! There is a rising trend toward the use of zinc as a wrap over existing table tops and tired dining room tables, bars and other surfaces. Once treated, the antique, almost rustic presentation of Zinc, transforms the mundane and functional into stylish and interesting, enhancing any dining room or bar.
Q. Do we have to use stainless steel outdoors, I would rather have rusty steel?
For durability, stainless steel is very suitable for outdoor applications but it must be the correct gauge and finish. Many are attracted to the warm autumn themes produced by Corten (rusty steel) however “bleeding” may occur after rainfall, so it’s better positioned over stones or a porous surface to allow safe run off. Care must be taken when locating the product so that it drains away without staining walls and paths.
Q. I don’t want to use the same products as everyone else, can you offer me some alternatives?
We always offer a variety of options so that the customer is well informed before making the purchase.
Q. What products are most suitable for my kitchen / Dining room / Hall way / Outdoors / Indoors etc?
We always consider the possibility of human interaction (if any) with our products, the effects of water, heat and weather. In high traffic areas, smooth lines and firm contact with the surface for which it’s intended, ensure long lasting decorative works.
Custom made vs readily available
Q. Why is custom made always more expensive than off the shelf products?
